In case you haven’t heard, I went a little crazy at the end of 2009. So crazy, that my New Years resolution was to give up sweets for 30 days, and then I vowed to only indulge once a week. I know what you are thinking, what in the world made me do this. Well, you can find out here.
So, I survived. As did my family. I won’t say it was easy, but in the end I’m glad that I did it. Here’s why.
- My cravings did eventually stop. My physical cravings that is. My mental cravings, I don’t think those will ever stop. Sometimes, only chocolate can make a rough day better.
- I feel better. I have more energy. I learned to eat more fruit in place of cookies, chocolate, brownies. mmmm, brownies.
- I may have cheated-ish. Yes, I did sneak a few fruit snacks (only a few, I swear). And I’m not sure if this technically counts or not, but there was a granola bar or two that had a little bit of chocolate in them. But they were protein bars, so I think the protein outweighs the chocolate.
- I proved to myself that I can do it.
- On day 31, I completely indulged. Chocolate chip waffles for breakfast. Dark chocolate brownies with red-wine caramel sauce. And to my surprise on day 32 my will power remained and I didn’t even touch the brownies. Yay me!
- I’m setting a better example for my son. No sweets for him should also mean no sweets for me. Not, no-sweets-for-me-while-he’s-looking.
- I managed to avoid eating cake at my Godson’s baptism. Which actually wasn’t that difficult actually. Now, if it had been cream cheese frosting, I would have been all over it. Dad-oo on the other hand…
- Dad-oo followed my example, and I think he stuck to it. Except of course…for a couple of large pieces of cake. I’m pretty sure that he ate one for me.
- I could justify eating more at dinner. I needed to make up those extra dessert calories somewhere, right?
- Best of all, I learned that I have self control. I don’t have to eat an entire chocolate bar. I can eat half of it. If I can go 30 entire days with nothing, surely eating only half will be a breeze. Right? RIGHT????

WoW … I’m impressed!!! I’ve always said if quitting somoking is anything like quitting chocolate … I’d be in TROUBLE!! But self-control is a pretty awesome feeling!

@mandi @ it’s come to this, It is a great feeling, knowing that I really do have control. That was probably the best part of the challenge.

Wow. I’m impressed. I’m testing my “will power” with soda. I managed to go from multiple glasses a day to 3 cans, total, in the month of January.
I have to find something to drink in restaurants, though. That’s my big hang up. Water always tastes funny, so I need an alternative.
Once a week sounds like an excellent plan to me.

@Beth, That’s a huge accomplishment too. Did you notice that your cravings have lessened? Try iced tea in restaurants, you can add as much or as little sugar as you want.

@Allison, I have noticed that I just don’t want it so much anymore. There are times because I get migraines, that a Dr. Pepper is a good assist while I’m waiting for my husband to get home so I can take the heavy duty drugs, but generally, I just don’t need it.

Here’s a video that gives a billion reasons to avoid sugar. It’s very well presented.

@oh amanda, It really has made a difference. Even now, I don’t really want to eat sweets, so I don’t. Hopefully I can stick to it for the long run.

[...] So, what do I do when I have zero ideas for a fun Valentine’s Day craft? I turn to my other passion, baking. I needed an excuse to make some cookies anyway. The last time I made any cookies was, let’s see, before Christmas. When the cookie binge of 2009 happened. Now I remember what I gave up sweets for 30 days. [...]
