Every parent knows this struggle, getting the kiddo(s) to bed on time, at a reasonable time, without tears. Bedtime can often be stressful for both the parents and kiddos, if you let it get out of hand. So instead of dreading it, here are some tips and tricks for making bedtime run smoothly, and quickly. And if you’re really lucky, tear free.
- Make a routine! This is probably the number one way to make bedtime enjoyable for everyone. Start with getting everyone in their PJs. Then it’s time to brusha brusha (teeth that is). A book or two, hugs kisses and then it’s off to bed. This has worked like a charm for us.
- Wind down. Whether that means running laps around the house 30 minutes before bedtime to burn off extra energy, or a warm bubble bath to help calm nerves, find something that lets your kiddo prepare for bed, and something that signals bedtime is near.
- Calm fears. Say a little prayer, sign a song or chant a rhyme, cuddle with a favorite stuffed animal, whatever works to banish the boggie monster hiding in the closet or under the bed.
- Be firm. Let the kiddos know that you are serious about bedtime. Let them cry if need be. Or offer a reward for going to bed without putting up a fight. Whatever you decide, make sure that you follow through, so your kiddos take you, and bedtime, seriously
- Consistency. A smooth bedtime won’t happen overnight. Keep trying, and if you don’t see any improvements after a few days, modify the routine slightly until you find something that works.
