Side Effect’s – SAHM Week 4

One of the unfortunate side effects of being a stay-at-home mom is going from two comfortable incomes to one income. You kind of get used to being able to save for a rainy day, having a little disposable income, feeling secure about your financial stability. And then suddenly you have to watch every penny. Budget for groceries. Eat in, instead of going out. It can be a tough adjustment, if you let it.

This week I’ve been focusing on doing what I can to help improve our budget. Staying within a weekly spending allowance for groceries and other necessities. Cutting down on my driving (drat those play groups that are canceled after I drive halfway across the city). Finding free events or activities to entertain the kiddo. It’s been challenging, frustrating, and actually a little fun.

I’ve never been a huge spender to begin with. Sure I’ve splurged on the occasional Apple toy (no iPhone…yet). Yes, it’s true that I have very strong feelings for shoes, but I just can’t bring myself to spend more than $40 on a pair. OK, maybe $60 if I really need them. Truth be told, I’m kind of a saver (I’m sure that Dad-oo is nodding his head wildly in agreement), so the hardest change of going to one income is not being able to consistently add to our savings.

Instead of focusing on our stagnant saving accounts, I’m finding other ways to save, stretch and bend Dad-oo’s hard earned income. Creative ways to give gifts when we don’t have a lot to spare, like cute photo books of the kiddo’s heartwarming smile. Collecting coupons and waiting for a big sale to get a head start on Christmas shopping. Making our own crafts and activities, like bowling pins, instead of buying new toys and games. Shopping at secondhand stores for the kiddo, since it seems like he grows out of clothes every 3 or 4 days. Pushing aside wants (did I mention the iPhone) to make room for needs. Slowing down, enjoying the little things that life has to offer. Letting go of the things that don’t matter. Our needs are met, we have a little nest egg to fall back on if times are extra demanding. We are rich in friends, family and a super adorable little boy. And that little boy makes it all worth while.

I will never regret my decision to stay at home with the kiddo, and any kiddos that we will be blessed with in the future. No matter what hardships we endure, financial, emotional or other, it is the best decision for our family.

Cold weather makes it that much more difficult for me to budget. I hate being stuck inside and there is always room to spend when you are out and about.

Our budget has kind of taken a hit lately too, so I’m going to get creative at Christmas. In addition to kid pictures, I’m thinking etsy…and maybe donations to relevant charities.

good luck.

[...] We just kind of made the adjustment of going from two incomes to one. The biggest challenge was not being able to save much. Other than that, I was so thrilled to be at home that I didn’t care about the rest. And [...]
