Well, I made it through my first week as a stay-at-home-mom. It was both exactly what I expected and not at all what I expected. But I sure learned a lot about both myself and Eli. Here’s a quick day-by-day recap.
Monday: We managed to do everything I had planned! Chocolate chip banana pancakes for a yummy (an oh so unhealthy) breakfast. Book Babies with friends. Grocery shopping where a friendly old man managed to laugh Eli out of his grumpy, whiny, hungry pre-lunch mood. Lunch, PBJ on homemade bread of course. A nice long nap. Much playing the rest of the afternoon. No walk, since it freakin’ snowed. It was a great first day.
Tuesday: We planned on attending story time at the local kids consignment shop…but the day had changed and they hadn’t bothered to inform the local paper. So we showed up, browsed through the store, wondering where all of other kiddos where. After trying on multiple hats, Eli finally found one that he liked and a pair of mittens. As we were checking out, we asked about story time, which received a you-must-be-crazy look. Apparently story time is on Wednesday, not Tuesday. I mentioned that she might want to call the paper and let them know, but that seemed to just confuse her even more. Whatever. At least we got a hat and gloves out of the deal. Oh, and we took a walk on what turned out to be a perfect fall day (the snow was melting!).
Wednesday: Headed out to story time at Barnes and Nobel…but this time I had the day wrong. It is on Tuesday and Friday, not Wednesday and Friday. So I ordered some tea, Eli and I looked through a fascinating firetruck book (red truck Eli exclaimed loudly in the otherwise dead-quite store) and then we headed over to the story time that we missed on Tuesday. And that was finally a success. There wasn’t a large turnout, and I’m not in love with the woman who hosted it…but there was another little boy Eli’s age, and they played and laughed. And bounced balloons off of each others faces. Ahhh, to be 18 months again. You can hit people in the face and they laugh instead of press charges. We’ll definitely be going back next week. Hopefully we both made some new friends.
Thursday: This was our stay-in-our-PJs and bum-around-at-home day. At least that’s what it started out as. We managed to keep our PJs on until 11:00 and then I had enough. I needed to feel like a real person, not some scruff who doesn’t get dressed. I didn’t actually shower, but I at least made myself and Eli presentable. And brushed our teeth. We also got the house squeaky clean, or at least clean enough, for Grandma and Grandpa to stop by for a visit this weekend. We also made some homemade play-dough for afternoon fun. Woot!
Friday: We’re planning on making the trek out for another story time. Crossing our fingers that this one works out as we planned. Then Grandma and Grandpa are making an appearance in the afternoon for some cast signing and grandson spoiling. Not necessarily in that order. Should be a fun day.
We’ll see what next week holds. Once I get the hang of this SAHM thing, I’m hoping that we will fall into more of a routine. Maybe even work in a project at home, like organize Dad-oo’s closet. Or power cleaning the kitchen. And maybe we won’t have such a busy social life. One or two days at home won’t kill us. Actually, it will probably rejuvenate us.
