When I made the announcement at work that I was leaving to be a SAHM, one of my friends and co-workers asked “What is the first thing that you will do when you’re at home with Eli?” That stumped me. Sure I have a list of activities to do during the day, from mommy groups to swim lessons (once the leg is healed) to outings at the local art museum. And when the dreaded “s-word” comes along, snowball fights in the backyard (with a styling pair of Ski Banz to try out!) and sledding. But the first thing? I really haven’t given it much thought.
So now that I’ve had some time to mull it over, I pretty much have the whole day planned out. Monday, Oct. 12th will be our first official at-home day together. I know, it seems so far away, but really it’s only one more week. I’m thinking that I’ll prepare a special breakfast for the two of us (and Dad-oo if he hasn’t left for work already!). Maybe some pancakes with chocolate chips. Or maybe a special sweet bread from my new bread machine. No matter what I decide to make, it will be fun, and it will be sweet.
Monday mornings our library hosts are Book Babies, for kiddos 23 months and under. Eli and I stopped by this week to see what it was all about, since we were just sitting at home, waiting for a call from the doctor about his cast. We both had a blast. Because it was a our first time, I felt a little awkward. I didn’t know the words to the songs, or the little dances that go with. I just kind of made it up as I went along, singing softly so no one could hear when I got the words wrong. Eli really seemed to enjoy himself and was anxious to join the other kids dancing away. Soon little man, soon. Let’s let that leg heal first. The woman hosting the program was nice, but not as enthusiastic as I had imagined. Yet she managed to hold all of the kids attention, even the older ones who just wanted to run around and dance. And, as an added bonus, a women who used to be a customer of mine, before she became a SAHM was there with her little girl. Hopefully I’ll see her more often now that we’re both at home with the kiddos.
Next, it will be grocery shopping. I know what you’re thinking. What’s so special about that. Well, nothing really, but Eli LOVES to go grocery shopping. He flirts with the ladies, calls any man with gray (or blond) hair grandpa. He yells “Momma!” at the top of his lungs. He has a blast.
Then it’s lunch time. I have figured out what we’ll have yet. I’d like to take a special trip for chicken McNuggets, but Eli doesn’t really care for them. He’s more interested in licking the ketchup off of them, than eating the actually nugget. I suppose that’s a good thing though. Maybe we’ll pick up a Subway pizza. Or, better yet, maybe we’ll make pizza at home. Pizza, pizza!
Then it’s nap time and momma-get-a-break time. I’ll probably catch up on Twitter and see what’s happening in the Facebook world. Call Dad-oo to fill him in on our first day, and call a friend to share our mommy and son experiences. If I’m really “lucky” I’ll even get some house work done.
The only part of the day up in the air is after nap time. If the weather cooperate, we’ll go for a walk with one of the puggies. Maybe visit one of the local parks (no slides though!). Or if it’s a rainy dreary day, we’ll stay inside, reading books, coloring, building blocks, throwing balls, all of the things little boys like to do.
So I guess there really isn’t one specific thing that we will do. We’re just going to jump, feet first, into SAHM life. When this momma does something, she does it all the way.
Any suggestions for ways to make our first day special? I’d love to hear them! Leave a comment with some fun activities do during the day.

So now it’s your turn to call Mike at work every day?
If it’s nice out, maybe some finger painting outside or, if it’s bad weather, make some edible playdough. Creative building and then you get to eat it!
